Mesotherapy: A “Home Run” for Cellulite

By Scott A. Wasserman, M.D.

Mesotherapy is considered the “home run” of cosmetic medicine, effective cellulite reduction. Many have made promises, but few, if any, have delivered. Nowhere else in the exploding field of skin rejuvenation has more snake oil been sold. From pills to creams to machines, women have begged for relief — to the tune of thousands of dollars — from the “cottage cheese curse” that affects as many as 90% of post puberty females.

For many women the affliction is more than skin deep. Just talk to Shari K. a 36 year old woman who works as a salesperson for a well known pharmaceutical company. “I know it seems silly but having cellulite has deeply affected the way I feel about my body. I crawl out of bed backwards so my boyfriend doesn’t see. It’s ridiculous. And in talking to many of my friends I know I’m not alone.”

Cellulite or dermatoliposclerosis is considered to be a multifactorial problem. Research into the area reveals a relationship to estrogen, poor circulation and defective connective tissue. Contrary to what many people believe cellulite is not related to being overweight. Nor is it so much related to lack of diet or exercise(finally, one thing that isn’t!). While much is still not know it is assumed that part of the problem is a genetic predisposition. A gift from your parents in other words.

Yet, if what we hear is true, genetics may have met its match. Look out cellulite! A little know medical specialty called mesotherapy claims to be able to dramatically improve the appearance of cellulite.

Originated in France over 50 years ago mesotherapy involves “microinjections” into the skin of various medications, vitamins and amino acids. While originally developed to treat pain and arthritis problems it is now being used to treat a number of cosmetic conditions, including spot weight reduction and cellulite.

According to Dr. Scott Wasserman, a cosmetic physician in Scottsdale, Arizona, French and Brazilian women receive mesotherapy routinely starting in their 20’s to prevent cellulite. As far as Shari is concerned mesotherapy hasn’t arrived in the United States too soon. She has been making the two hour trip from Tucson to Scottsdale weekly to see Dr. Wasserman and receive as many as 50-100 injections of a cocktail of FDA approved drugs and vitamins.

According to Shari, mesotherapy has changed her life. Having completed five of and estimated ten treatments she says “my thighs and derriere are almost perfectly smooth now. Mesotherapy has made an incredible difference in my life.”

According to Dr. Wasserman as many as 10-15 treatments may be required to get long lasting results. At $400 a session, smooth skin and peace of mind won’t come cheap.

Not all physicians are convinced though about the merits of mesotherapy. Some state a lack of any clinical studies done in this country. Others feel it’s simply too soon to pass any kind of judgment

By now you might be wondering: Is mesotherapy snake oil or Lorenzo’s oil? One thing is for sure though, talk to Shari and she’ll tell you “ play ball”!
